Cheap Wedding Reception Ideas Part Two

When planning a cheap wedding reception it’s ok to splurge on a few things as long as you cut corners elsewhere.  That is where prioritization comes in!  It’s all about give and take.  Here are a few tips to cut corners and save on a few things so you can splurge on others.

·         Your Cake:  What is cake but just a bunch of flour and eggs.  Why is it so expensive?  Well when you put the term “wedding” in front of anything the price automatically doubles.  There are a few options to getting a cake for your cheap wedding reception.  If you or a friend knows how to bake, consider baking your own cake.  Otherwise you can order a cake from the local grocery store.  If you have your heart set on the extravagant tiered wedding cake many bakers offer a faux cake option.  What this means is that the bottom layer of the cake will be real for cake cutting purposes, but the other tiers will be Styrofoam that has been iced and decorated to look like a real cake.  After you and your groom cut the cake, your caterer (or a designated guest) can bring the cake into the kitchen where you will have an inexpensive sheet cake from the local grocery store to serve to your guests.  Your guests will never know the difference!

·         The Attire: While some brides are nice enough to pay for the wedding party attire, it is customary for the wedding party to pay for their own outfits.  Don’t feel bad about this as they should be aware of this when they accept your invitation to be in the wedding.  However you should also be aware that what each of them can afford may vary so try to keep it under $100.  For your wedding dress you have a few options.  There are many department stores and bridal stores such as David’s Bridal that offer gowns for as little as $99.  If you have your heart set on a designer dress, keep your eye out for sample sales!  I found a designer gown for my wedding that was originally $2300 for only $200!  For the guys don’t worry about buying tuxes, you can rent them for as little as $79, or ditch the tuxes all together and go for suits that they already have.

·         The Getaway Car: Instead of having a limo, consider using your own car for transportation.  If one of your friends or relatives has a nice car you can ask to borrow it for the night.  Have the best man drive you so you and your hubby can sit together in the back.
